Ohio, for those unfamiliar with American Midwestern geography, is in the Great Lakes region, between Indiana and Pennsylvania. It’s a lovely little state taking only 3 hours to get to any given point from its capital, Columbus.
If you love to travel and you’re looking for a quick winter weekend getaway, Ohio is a great place to come and sit by the warmth of a roaring fire and drink hot chocolate as the snow comes down.
Get your gloves and woolly hat on because Ohio is all about those winter sports. There are 5 ski resorts around the state and you can go tobogganing too. But snow isn’t the only draw. When the ice gets thick enough on Ohio’s lakes, ice fishing is a popular local activity that you can try too. You must make sure that the ice is safe and you have a fishing permit before you go out, otherwise, see if your hotel can recommend a local guide to take you out.
Cincinnati is at the south of the state on the border with Indiana and is certainly worth dropping in on if only for the famous Cincinnati Zoo. Many of the animals will be kept inside heated rooms over the winter, but you can still go and see them and enjoy the festival of lights throughout the winter season too.
Columbus is the capital of Ohio and is ideally located for exploring the whole state. Set up your base in the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center for great access to the rest of the state’s wonders. While you are there be sure to drop in on the Columbus Museum of Art. The building itself is an amazing work of architecture, so even if you aren’t a fan of the impressionism inside, it is well worth the visit.
Cleveland is right on Lake Erie at the north border of Ohio and is the best place for foodies to go. Here the districts of Little Italy, Slavic Village and Tremont show the real benefits of welcoming immigrants to the city: it’s all on the plate. Cleveland is also jam packed with sporting events this season so make sure you book ahead to catch a game
Cincinnati Zoo isn’t the only place you can enjoy winter lights this year, the whole state of Ohio will be lit up with light displays creating an amazing winter wonderland. In fact, you could easily spend the whole of December travelling around the state for the different winter light events being hosted here. With twinkling lights and plenty of events going on, it is as ideal for a weekend escape as it is for spending a few nights curled up in front of the fire watching the snow fall.
