Ways to Promote Happiness
Life isn’t all rainbow dashes and tie-dye butterflies. But you probably knew this already. Instead, life is this glorious epoch where you have to tread water a lot of the time and try to cling to the moments of happiness in between the stresses of, well, existing.
Bills, debts, bereavement, family feuds, friends falling out, jobs you don’t want to work, healthcare insurance you can’t afford to pay, Donald Trump – there is a plethora of things that can ruin your day.
But, there is also a plethora of little things that can make your life better too and, if it is okay with you, these are things we would like to focus on.
Wake Up and Dance
Many of you know that I’m an advocate for movement first thing in the morning. Yoga is great but dancing works well too. I suggest making a morning playlist that helps you get out of bed in the morning and encourages you to jump start your day.
Don’t Be Afraid To Go Han Solo
The people you hang out with can have a huge influence on your life. If they are all good egg’s with ambition and vitality then sweet. If, however, they are content with mediocrity, going nowhere in life, doing nothing with their talents are hell-bent on doing the stuff you did as teenagers, you need to go solo. That doesn’t mean you have to do it completely or stop caring about them, it just means ensuring your ambition isn’t getting put in the crosshairs too. You won’t know how amazing and liberating this is until you do it.
Smile. Just Smile.
How warm and fuzzy do you feel when you see someone walking down the street smiling. They stand out like a sunrise amongst the grey and miserable faces of lost commuters. Their smile is infectious and makes you want to smile and when you smile you feel amazing. Be that person to kickstart more smiles. No excuses like, “I don’t like my smile,” because there are people like The Smile Gallery dentists who can literally fix that. So, whether you are still smiling because of Naaaaa Sevenyaaaa, because you have a date with the person your crush on later, because the sun is shining, or because you’ve just discovered the sexy music of Gary Clark Jr, smile more. It’s the one thing on this list we would suggest above all others.
Stop Working A Job You Loathe
Life is way too short to be miserable for eight hours a day. Seriously, no amount of money is worth sacrificing your happiness. So, if you’re working a job you hate, get out. Apply for other jobs each day and increase your chances of a callback. Just don’t apply for other jobs you are going to loathe as much. Figure out what work will make you content or, better yet, happy and figure a way to get into that line of work. If it means starting at the bottom again, so be it. In the long run, you’ll get that sensational feeling known as no regrets.
Lace Up And Exercise
When was the last time you hit the gym, went for a run, took a stroll or lifted some weights and not felt a hundred percent better (in terms of your mood) afterwards? Exactly. That is why you need to start squeezing more exercise into your life on the regular. It will improve your wellness no end.
Read The News With A Soundtrack
If you want to feel really crap about life and the world in general then reading the news is a surefire way to go. Of course, we all want and need to know what is going on in the world so, next time you start flicking through the pages of a newspaper or scrolling through the news app, try plugging into a little bit of funky music, Pharrell’s Happy, James Brown’s I Feel Good or anything by Bruno Mars. Trust us, the news won’t feel so bleak after that.
Stop Counting Calories
Obviously I’m an advocate for healthy eating but part of a sustainable healthy relationship to food is not obsessing about numbers and depriving yourself of foods that bring you pleasure. Balance is key, however. Whether your goal is to consume more nutritious foods or to lose weight, you can get where you’re trying to go without punishing yourself.
